December 2000

Monday 18th December 2000

Hmm, well I seem to have got a little bit behind on writing this thing. Looking back at the November page, it only seems to have one entry. Oops. And sitting here over a month later, I'm failing to think of anything to fill in the gaps. I could say that Frodo has been seen in college again, so is alive and well. Or that I went to Lincoln's carol concert at the end of term, which was really rather good. Or that I went to a Gilbert & Sullivan performance (The Sourcerer) with Alistair, which was excellent. Or the evening when Lucy was in Oxford. We had a nice meal at Ask, followed by Charlie's Angels, which is a very good film. Or my first introduction of University vs. Family - introducing glis to my cousin Christian. Which was also a fun evening. Or that my schoolfriend Carl came up to Oxford, went to a hack party full of IRCers, and survived ;-). Or the haircut glis gave me, which surprised my parents when I got back here :-).

I've just returned home to Germany after having stayed up for an extra 2 weeks beyond the end of term.

It really has made al the difference keeping my room throughout the holiday; no more cramming all my junk into the morris, twice. I have to say the real aim of staying up - to get a lot of work done - wasn't entirely successful.

Coming back to Germany was a bit of a flop - the time I allowed to get from Oxford to Cambridge wasn't enough, as there were two quite big traffic jams, and very heavy traffic elsewhere. As a result of this, I missed my flight and had to stay with Ron, the neighbour to our house in Cambridge (which is being rented out) where I left my car. Staying there brought back a few, er, memories, yes. But anyway.

Taxi took me to the flight the following morning, and all went smoothly, landing me at home a couple of hours before a dinner party here (to find chaos in the preparations for this :-) ).

It all looks different here; my room has acquired a new carpet, and downstairs has been recarpeted and repainted.

Next tasks are christmas shopping, writing and sending cards, and (erm) work. Then comes the decision about going to the New Year celebrations in Oxford. Erm, yes. At the moment, I think I'll probably go, because it sounds better than the alternative of sitting around at home when I know everyone else is there ;-)

These online diaries are a tricky to write. I could make it a dry summary of events happening, without going into any of the, er, gory details. And this is pretty much what I've been doing, although at some points I've skirted dangerously close to events which really need clarifying. If I did so, I'd need to write down things that probably shouldn't be shouted to the world on a web page. Of which there were several this month. Ahem. Oh well, I've tried to strike a balance. Shout if you think I haven't :).

On second thoughts, I think I will go to the NY party - it will give me something to write about ;-)

I'm ploughing through the first Harry Potter book at the moment, because I want to finish it before the Boxing Day marathon, where it's being read in its entirety by Stephen Fry on Radio 4. All 8 hours of it.

Well, I think that pretty much brings it up to date with as much as I can remember. From now on, I'll try and do pretty much daily updates if anything interesting happens. Promise (ho ho).

The only interesting thing about today, is that I finally managed to get my iMac's hard disk functional again. Now, email or christmas cards? Email or christmas cards?

Thursday 21st December 2000

Hmm, so much for my daily updates. Oh well, I'm getting there. Up nice and early today, cos we're off to England, first stop Oxford.
